My students are eager to learn about the world around them. I notice their interest level rise when we talk about different cultures and the world around us. My students live in a tight knit community of mostly recent immigrant families from Mexico and other Latin American countries. The majority are low-income families with little means for extra-curricular activities. Their exposure to current events is also limited. Our school has been steadily improving test scores through diligent work on behalf of both students and teachers, however we continue to struggle with reading comprehension. With a high percentage of English Language Learners, our students find it difficult to keep up with the academic language in the core areas, especially, the sciences.
