I teach fifty-two students who are transitioning from the bilingual classroom into English. Fifth grade bilingual students will have to test in English for the first time in their academic careers as they transition from their native language in all English classes. Over 90% of our bilingual fourth grade students meet or exceed state standards on the Spanish writing, reading and math STAAR tests of Texas. These same students who are successful in their native language struggle in fifth grade to pass math, reading and science STAAR tests. I believe that the T=BK project would be a great way to immerse my students into academic English while having fun learning about science. About Ten of the students are advanced in their writing, speaking and reading of English. The remaining students are at at an intermediate or beginning level. All of these students are at risk because they have not developed the English skills they need to continue growing academically.
