I have a class of 20 students. We are one of 5 second grade classrooms in a school of 500. Our days consistent of a lot of instruction and transitions throughout our classroom. Some of our classroom time is spent together on the carpet. We being our day with a 20 minute Morning Meeting that takes place at the carpet. Also, students use the carpet area throughout the day as a reading space, a place to play math games, and a place to sit for whole group instruction. My current carpet is just not big enough to fit 20 second grade bodies. There is always 5-6 students who end up having to sit on the floor beyond the edge of the carpet. I am hoping that a bigger carpet space will help to make all students feel included.
