My classroom is composed of 4th grade GIFTED AND TALENTED students in the heart of the inner-city. The majority of them are second language learners and come from low socio-economic backgrounds. They do not get much exposure to art and art history at home. Although we have been fulfilling their intellectual needs, we lack instruction in the "talented" portion. This includes visual arts. This "lack" of instruction primarily arises from a obvious need in monetary funds. Their eyes light up when it is time to learn about art. There are many advanced students in my class who thrive off of art. More than a third have expressed a deep desire to become artists.
