My students are Hispanic and black. They come from single parents who hold two jobs; homes where Spanish is the first language, and homes where two families are in them. These second graders are eager to learn and their parents bring them to school everyday even late because of a doctor's appointment. Their homes are of low socioeconomic statuses and all students qualify for the free-lunch federal programs. Also, most of them use the after-school programs sometime during the year. So parents can pick them up one or two hours after school has ended. School of attendance is a year round. They are track A and will attend 168 days of school, but if furlough days approved only 163. A school of eleven hundred students with no sports programs nor money for field trips. Students however, have their own personalities and aspire to finish school because, "college and a job wait for you if you finish high school". They enjoy games and the internet for learning purposes.
