Our school is in a rural area with high poverty. We have 74% free/reduced lunch, making us a Provision II school with all students receiving free lunches. A high percentage of our students lack motivation to come to school, let alone do classwork. I find that students are more interested in lessons that involve hands-on learning. Every day when my students come into class, they ask, "Are we doing lab today?" I find it exciting to be able to make these students eager to come to class. The word "lab" has a broad definition in my classroom. These activities could include illustrating various cycles, constructing models, playing a game, or any other hands-on demonstration. This is the great and "fun" part of teaching! Although the students feel like they are playing, they are learning simultaneously. Hands-on activities help the students better understand some of the hardest science concepts.
