Our school is situated in the inner city. The school population is about 1,300 students all on a traditional calendar. Eighty percent of our students are English Language Learners, Spanish being their primary language. The community that these students are living in presents them with many obstacles in order for them to do well in school. Students need to inspired to read and encouraged to do well in school. Our school has made many strides to help promote literacy in the community, yet there are many struggles that hinder our student learning experience. I believe that reading one of the most fundamental tools that we can provide these children with is the ability to read, or to feel encouraged to do better in reading. I hope to provide the tools for the students to decode; to read with fluency, to comprehend text and to analyze what they read.
