As a special education high school teacher, many of my students have high incidence disabilities, such as Specific Learning Disability and Emotional Disturbance. The average reading level of our seniors is a 5th grade level, but is much lower for my students. Our school is in a community with the lowest GDP in the city, so nearly all of our students are eligible for Title I benefits. We want our students to be as successful as possible, but without high interest books that our students can actually read, they will not be able to improve their own reading levels.
