My classroom is made up of 50 students with a WIDE variety of needs. The make up of the class is African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian. It is filled with special education students as well as ELL students. It is a 98% free and reduced school, which means that experiences and background knowledge is lacking. Students in my class need to get their life experiences through books. The only possibility to do this is through books. I want students to reach for a book in our classroom library and open it and take an adventure. After they read the book, I want them to share and tell what they read and become exciting about what they read. This early practice will create life long readers and learning. The different genre books and response journals will teach students how to comprehend and differentiate between authors' styles and genres.
