This year, 60% of my class entered first grade at high risk for reading failure. Through our testing and data collecting, I found out that they have very little phonemic awareness and phonics skills. I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning and believe that hands-on activities help cement the skills they are learning. The materials I am ordering, will give my students multiple avenues to learn new skills. We will be playing multiple phonics and phonemic awareness games using the ordered manipulatives. We will use regular whiteboards multiple times a day to practice phonics patterns and mini-boards to practice breaking words into syllables. While I am working with small groups of students on these skills, the rest of my kids can use their headphones to work on skills with their Chromebooks. I feel that through hands-on activities, my students will be able to experience success no matter what their skill level or what special needs they have.
