My school is has a high number of economically disadvantaged kids and over 70% of my students are learning English as their second language. These students don't always have the words to tell their story, but they have a story. Many of my second graders live with other families in one home. Many only have one parent. They come to school to eat free breakfast and lunch. They don't always have seasonally appropriate clothing. When I need to speak to a parent I don't always have a working phone number and I almost always need a translator. Despite the hardships that some are forced to deal with they are positive and hardworking children. They love to write and they love coming to school. I want them to always feel that way. I want to provide them with many positive learning experiences that will stay with them as they progress through their educational careers. After all, they ARE our future.
