My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th grade high-achievers and were invited by their science teachers to participate in the Science Olympiad team. In a Title 1 school, teachers spend so much time bridging the achievement gap and focusing on those neglected in elementary school. While we differentiate as much as possible, I believe our high achievers are not challenged enough. In order to meet the needs of our brightest kids, the science teachers formed a Science Olympiad team two years ago. Our students participate in a competition against other schools in the region. For the past two years, we have been the only all-minority (Black and Hispanic) school competing. In addition to homework, sports teams, and community activities, the Olympians give their Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings (and a lot of out-of-school time) to prepare for the competition. They are dedicated to, motivated by, and have fun in Science Olympiad.
