I have 9 students in my class: Three boys and six girls. All of them are Hispanic. They come from low income homes, actually, the school is cataloged as a Title One school, meaning most of the students are from such socioeconomic level. My students are all Moderate Mentally Challenged, from the 10th Grade (five) and 12th Grade (four). They are all well behaved, inquisitive, curious, willing to learn… they want to learn! Their learning disability prevents them from assimilating academic knowledge, but I need to prepare them to become independent individuals, productive members of society. They all understand that sooner rather than later, they will have to fend for themselves, and they want to be prepared for that eventuality. I have been introducing the principles of Community Based Instruction, or CBI. In my class the students learn how to perform, and survive, in their neighborhood environment… they learn life skills, people skills, social, selling skills, etc.
