My students are dedicated students who attend a young charter high school. In the charter system, money is very tight and budgets are small. Unfortunately, novel sets are expendable items on these budgets. Your donation through Donors Choose can help my students discover the joy of reading a book that examines the humanity of history. My students are the most involved in my history lesson when I can stop for a second and share with them a story or anecdote about what they are learning. They want to learn about the people's lives and what makes these historical figures who they are. My students are dedicated to understanding the why's and how's of the big picture in history, but they crave knowledge about the when and where's. I am hoping that this novel can help them begin to understand that World War I was just as much about young Erich Maria Remarque as it is about Woodrow Wilson and the Lusitania.
