My kids generally enjoy my class and bond as a community, although they are diverse in ages (10th - 12th grade) as well as ethnicity, gender, and ability level. Our school is in a neighborhood that is low in income but rich in local history, community feeling and diverse ethnicity's, due to many immigrant communities. Guest speakers to my classes always say they love our school culture -- good critical thinkers, and kids who speak openly and honestly about important issues. I also find the students to be generally very kind and accepting of one another -- rare in adolescent peer groups. Our school has had its struggles in the past, and had been thought to be one of the underperforming schools, at least by statistics, but those of us who teach there really love it, the students are proud of their schools and the community supports the improvements that have been made over the last 4-5 years with the help of a major grant. We still strive to improve and our students need support.
