As a reading intervention teacher working with children in grades K-6, my goal is to improve each student's reading level. I encourage students to practice reading at home in order to become better readers. Most struggling readers usually won't choose to read on their own because it is often too difficult. However, if they have books that they like, their attitude towards reading does improve. Our school is located in a high poverty area with most students receiving free/reduced lunch. Many of my intervention students do not have the resources to purchase books on their own and aren't taken to the public library by their parents. In addition, due to budget cuts, our school library no longer has a librarian and our supply of popular literature is limited. The books in my classroom library are old, worn and outdated.
