Our school is located in a dense, urban environment in California. Only recently, we became a charter school under the umbrella of a larger school district. We chose this model in order to create an school community rich in arts-integrated activities and infused with exploratory, hands-on instructional methods. Our goal is to create a program rich in content that is rigorous, technologically relevant, and whole child centered. I teach active and enthusiastic TK Students who are eager to learn and play together. They learn best when given concrete materials to explore, manipulate and discover. When my students are allowed to learn through play, abstract concepts become reinforced through various sensory experiences. These activities create deeper levels of understanding. Music is a perfect way to bridge the gap between symbolic concepts and the real world around them.
