Students will read Tara Westover's memoir Educated along with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus in a study of the modern Bildungsroman. The two stories take place in culturally and geographically disparate places, but the stories of the two young protagonists are intrinsically similar. Students will ask questions essential to a modern coming of age narrative: what does it mean to be "educated"; what does it mean to be truly free; what are the benefits and consequences of silence; what is the impact of oppression on everyday lives of victims? In accordance with Pennsylvania Standards, students will write routinely over short and extended time frames for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
