My students come from a somewhat rural community whose economy has suffered in the past decade. They seek to improve their future and challenge themselves with rigorous school curriculum. They are limited, however, in their exposure to science when they reach tenth grade. Therefore, I have to stir a passion for science in them so that they can see the benefit of a future in science careers. Many of them enter the classroom with misconceptions and the mentality that they are "not good at science." I try to correct these misconceptions and allow them to show and improve their abilities through investigations. Our school is medium sized and has many different types of students as do most public schools around the country. Students have to continually balance home life, social life, and academic life in a healthy manner so that they can be successful. I try to support this as much as possible by making my classroom a positive learning environment.
