The exuberant and joyful learners I have the pleasure of teaching walk in the doors, eyes wide and excited to learn. But the primary learners here have faced significant challenges before entering our room. Most of them come from homes where their families have struggled daily to provide for their basic needs. Parents and guardians don't have the time or resources to support and prepare their children for school. Many of them come from homes where English is their second language or where parents may not be able to read or write themselves. Our urban school has had some rough times in the past as we have used instructional programs that did not support our students' success in learning to read and write. We have been transforming our school and are seeing amazing things happen as we engage our students with beautiful books and language that supports their Literacy development.
