My students are K-5 grade. We are a 95% free and reduced lunch. We are in a poverty area where the kids hear and see things that small kids shouldn't. In the past few years music has not been a huge priority to them. I took over a couple of years ago and am really trying to encourage kids to enjoy, play, read, and fall in love with music and movement. Been exposed to music is proven to encourage brain growth. My kids started performing a couple of years ago and what a difference that has made in our school.. One teacher last year stated in a meeting that music has been our stepping stone for kids to boost their self-esteem, increase pride in their work. I started a before and after school program that students can attend for more music. Last year my group was 35 members strong.
