I work at a public high school in New York City with a population of entirely Spanish speaking immigrant students from Mexico, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador and other Spanish speaking countries. With the aim of encouraging their bilingualism, the school promotes their native Spanish speaking skills while at the same time developing their English speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. I teach 9th grade newcomer students as well as intermediate level ESL students. My students dream of going to college and being professionals. For this reason, it is urgent that they learn to read and write in English so that in four years they can graduate high school and succeed in college.
