I teach in a rural school in Southwest Florida with a super group of kids. There is a sizable Hispanic population at our school and they are very hardworking and eager to learn. Because we are out in the country, many of the kids' parents leave early for work and come home late. There is not a lot of parental support, often because of work schedules, but also because some of the parents did not have the privilege of education when they were young. I am so thankful to have a job where I get to help these little individual blossom and grow everyday. At third grade, they are still like sponges and WANT to learn as much as they can. Unfortunately, third grade is also a critical year for reading and motivation. Research shows that if they are not on grade level by the end of their third grade year, they probably never will be. I am working hard to keep the motivation up and running and get them inspired so that when they leave me, they will never want to stop learning!
