My wonderful students are learning 8th grade Physical Science. They attend a public school 6 through 8th grade that has over 2,000 students total. The school has 100% of its students receiving free/reduced lunch, and consists of 77% entering as English learners. My students are hard workers, but unfortunately many enter 8th grade well below grade level and it is a struggle to catch up. Only the most dedicated, hard workers are able to erase their misconceptions/skill gaps and still exit middle school meeting all the state proficiency levels. At our school there is such a focus on Math and English (deservedly so, since it is what the state tests students on the most)that Science classes only meet every other day.
