The craft and art supplies I am requesting, will encourage the creative efforts of my students and support retention of the content they explore and write about. You might think that only younger students enjoy these types of activities, such as models and dioramas with the popularity of so much technology; however, I've found that to be untrue. Middle School students really enjoy drawing, creating characters , and stories for the characters they create. They ask 'what if' questions and challenge information presented by their peers about the cultures, different environments, and the ways they live. They often like to show off their work competitively, wanting me to chose or vote for which of their works and stories is the best. These drawings and stories often do not have anything to do with the present task. However, since this is an activity that they naturally gravitate toward, I can incorporate these skills into an activity that allows them to research cultures, habitats, and historical events and put those creative and competitive skills to good use.
