I teach in a low income community in New York City - a city that is supposed to conjure up images of prosperity and possibility. As a 6th grade English and social studies teacher, I have tried to keep my students motivated and foster a greater love of reading. The majority of my students are reading on a 3rd or 4th grade level, while a fortunate few are reading on level or higher. At the commencement of the school year, our class set a significant and challenging goal- each student would improve their reading level by two years. Additionally, each student was expected to read 25 books during the course of the school year. With your help we can accomplish our goals, my students will have books that interest and excite them, and they can be put on a path towards higher, more challenging, and more enjoyable books in the future.
