I teach low-performing high school students who struggle with basic literacy. Many of my kids in my class have failed their previous science classes. They've been placed in a slowed-down course to give them two semesters instead of one to prepare for the state test which they MUST pass to graduate. My students do not reflect the diversity of the school they attend. I have more students of color (68% Black students in a school that is 29% black overall) and more students who receive free and reduced lunch - 40% of my students come from lower income families.
