Many of my students have never owned a calculator before. I teach tenth and eleventh graders chemistry in the heart of Oakland. I was surprised in my first few weeks teaching there to see how few had ever used one. Many of my students are behind grade level in math and I do not want that to be an obstacle to accessing the higher level math concepts within chemistry.
