My students are interested in learning, but are afraid of showing their interest in intellectual gains. Some students fear success because of the perception that they have betrayed their families and culture. Other students feel the presence of gangs demands their attention, although their involvement is merely superficial and representative of the lack of alternative options. Still more students want to experience success not at a failing school, but at nationally and internationally competitive institutions.
