My science students all have cognitive disabilities and are in self-contained classes for their core subjects. They will not earn high school diplomas and are taught each at their own level. I am able to teach them whatever they need to know to live as independently as possible after they finish high school. I have found that they love science when it is taught in an experiential and hands-on way. I try to teach concepts like following directions, creating and reading tables and graphs, and measuring using hands-on projects. I am always surprised and delighted to see students grow and take on leadership roles when allowed to complete projects they understand and feel confidence completing.
