My students care about their success in the classroom, and in the world. I often have students in my room till after 6 pm for tutoring. But, they cannot achieve what they strive for. They are operating at a deficit because they do not have the supplies they need for school. I teach at an urban school where 100% of the students are on free/reduced lunch plans. The school is predominantly African American with a few Native Americans and a couple Hispanics. My students often come to class with just themselves - no backpack to carry papers, pens or worksheets. They see the difference between their education and that of the affluent, primarily Caucasian schools around them, in the same district. Many of my students have kids of their own. They want to do better for their kids, than they had. But they know they need to graduate and get their diploma. They live hard lives, but strive to succeed in the classroom, despite monetary setbacks.
