My students are 99% Hispanic and the majority of them have limited english proficiency. The complex chemistry language seems foreign to most of them. There is a need to simplify and break down these scientific concepts into simpler ones where students could understand their meanings, and appreciate its importance. My students come from low-income families; live with their immediate family and other relatives; have parents who are either non-English speakers, or limited English speakers. They attend a year-round large public school. Most of them are taking chemistry because it's a requirement for high school graduation. The challenge is to make science/chemistry alive and fun to them, using simple day-to-day words and using a technology like the document camera in the classroom.
