My partner teacher and I have sixty 6th grade students between us. She teaches Language Arts and Social Studies. I teach Math and Science. Our public school district sits in a lovely agriculturally rich rural location in Washington State. Our students are primarily Hispanic students whose parents work in the fields (many working 2-3 jobs to support their children's needs). Many of our students are still learning English and have not had exposure to much science. Our school has a very high (80%+) free and reduced lunch population. Our teachers work extremely hard to impart as much knowledge on these young (and quite bright) minds. Our students work very hard to push past their language and poverty limitations (some of our students are even homeless) to achieve greatness. Our school even won the 2011 Washington Achievement Award for Closing the Achievement Gap.
