My classroom is comprised of 24 energetic and inquisitive first graders. I teach in a rural, Title I school where 79% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My students do not have a wide variety of life experiences, but they come to my classroom eager and enthusiastic to learn new things each day. Many of my students are young boys who love to learn kinesthetically, by moving and doing things. They thrive when we act things out, create movement, or participate in hands-on activities. However, when these same students are faced with times when they must sit still and focus on a task, many of them struggle. They are always fidgeting in their chairs, leaning back, or sitting on their knees.
