In this large urban high school setting, the students might at first sight seem rowdy and misbehaved. But that is a false impression. It does’t take long before you realize that they are in fact very respectful and hard-working. They hail mostly from the Caribbean, either as first or second generation Americans. Many of them are extremely motivated and believe in the American dream, in the same way that their parents did. The school is a campus school: that is, one of those very large urban high schools that was broken down into small schools. The results on the whole are mixed, but the final verdict is not yet in. However, what is most impressive of all is these youngsters’ voracious reading habits. For all the naysayers out there who lament the fact that people don’t read, I should just show my circulation stats! I cannot keep up with the constant demand for books, and I feel so bad disappointing so many of them when the books they want are unavailable!
