Middle school students love to be "in the moment" and this is true of my current yearbook class. Our school is a K-8 charter school with over 950 students from moderately income families. Using a digital camera to capture the moment is not common in most of the households. The yearbook class the students take is one of two electives they can choose outside the core curriculum. Our school stresses the education of the whole child, yes even in the midst of the budget crisis, as a means to helping them grow into a better adult. To achieve this end our school encourages electives that challenge students think creatively, even if this creative thinking challenges a student’s ability. Yearbook creation presents this challenge to students; it allows them to not only capture the moment, but be a part of the moment.
