We live in one of the most diverse areas in the nation and my students speak many different languages at home. Students are eager to learn and motivated to grow as readers but face challenges of poverty and busy families, many of which have immigrated just recently to the United States. The families don't always know how to support their children in this public school system. One of the problems is a lack of books at home, especially the need for books to read at students' reading level. When a child tells me they don't have books to read at home, I want to respond by placing a book in their hands.
