My students are 9th graders in a public school jr. high setting. The population is ethnically diverse with 30-40% of students classified as either immigrants or first generation Americans. The school has a large number of English Language Learners and a moderate level of poverty. The community is predominately blue collar with little financial supports for the arts. Sports are a big focus of the school system. My art students are not usually the athletes, the kids that get the awards, the recognition, the attention. They are the kids that don't quite fit in, the overlooked, the quiet ones. In the art room, they feel at home, they feel important. I try to find ways to allow their talents to shine. They need to feel a part of the school community and be recognized by their peers and the community.
