My school is labeled as a “title one public high school” in North Carolina. This means that most of the students attending our school come from poor backgrounds. Over sixty-five percent of the students here are categorized as “low income.” Being in a rural setting the students have grown up with very little. Their loving personality grows with their strong connection to their families and the role models that they find through-out their lives. These students are thankful for the small things in life and truly know the joy of waking up in the morning and being able to go to school with their close friends and see the teachers that they have grown to love. Being a teacher, one must also be a counselor. The past two years of teaching at West Craven, I have come to learn more about the lives of my students then I have ever thought. The struggles and hardships that they have are more than I have ever experienced in my lifetime. It is amazing to me how these students push through their hardships and continue to succeed in the classroom. It gives me great pride when I get to see them walk across the stage at graduation knowing that they are the first one in their family to not only graduate but even continue their education at a higher level. Students at West Craven have had to grow up so fast, help support their own families, overcome many hardships, and do well in school. They are strong individuals that deserve nothing but the best education. My Marine Biology class will consist of upper classmen that have finished taking all required science classes and want to continue on at a higher level. These students enjoy science and have been inspired to learn more about the ecosystems that are so close to their own community. The high school located about forty-five miles inland of coastal North Carolina. Although this does not seem that far there are students that have never stepped foot on North Carolina’s shore. With signing up for this class I hope that they all will have an opportunity to do so.
