After hearing an amazing speaker, Julie Adams, I am more aware of my students need to make choices and have control over certain things. These choices lead to learning that there are positive and negative consequences to their actions. As a personal trainer and teacher for many years, I know that movement helps make the brain more receptive. When I attended the kindergarten conference in Pasadena I heard a great speaker on flexible seating. I have been using flexible seating with the school chairs and tables I have, and we all love how effective it is. The children choose their seat each Monday on Move-it Monday. When we read or write or do certain projects children choose certain places in the classroom to sit or lie down since I just have school chairs. I have purchased a few fun chairs, and my children love to sit in them. I have noticed that the children stay focused for longer periods of time when they have free choice seating. During small group time, when I am working with the children at my table, the children will choose a balance ball chair, a Kore Wobble chair, or a Stay -N-Play balance ball. Kindergarteners lose their focus quickly, and writing is the most difficult, which is why I have them work at my table. These chairs will give the children an outlet for their extra energy as well as will help their balance, so that they can focus and do their work more effectively. The Sweet Seat Elephant will enable children to have a comfortable seat for reading time, writing time, or math time. The chairs will be used during regular seat time as well.
