Many of my students don't have backpacks. Many of my eleven and twelve year-old students are also de facto parents of their siblings. Most cannot afford the binders that I am requesting. Yet, my students never mention poverty nor their struggles. Instead of engaging in fights, my students engage in conversations about owning their actions and going to college. And my job is to teach them about the world; to tell them that the world is helpful, accepting, and forgiving. Despite our world; one which argues, rejects, and hates, my students believe that our world can be changed; they believe it isn't by joining the system, and so many of them believe they can succeed without the comfort of money.
