The students in the AVID program are made up of populations traditionally underrepresented in college. Most of them are low-income, ethnically diverse, and first in their families to attend college. Our students are the most diverse/low-income students in the state. We currently have over 150 students, grades 9-12, and are working to grow our program. These students are dedicated enough to give up an elective class each year to be in AVID. AVID provides them with practice in writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading methods that will assist them in honors and AP classes while in high school. It ups the ante for students who have college potential but are not traditionally students who choose or are chosen for higher level/rigorous courses while in high school. It provides them opportunities to visit area colleges, helps with test prep, college essays/applications, etc... There are tutors and teachers that help, but it is because of an incredible intrinsic motivation that it works.
