My students are intelligent and inquisitive individuals. We are currently reading William Shakespeare's Othello as a class and they surprise me everyday with their insights into this difficult text. We have had many discussions about what motivates individuals to act a certain way and we have dissected characters in order to examine the roots of their motivations. Shakespeare's villainous character, Iago, has particularly fascinated and frustrated my young scholars: he is just so conniving, manipulative and evil! Wuthering Heights, with its anti-hero Heathcliff and its extensive cast of troubled characters, would provide the perfect learning opportunity for my students, further challenging their conceptions of character, while exposing them to a treasured piece of great literature.
