Special needs students face many challenges throughout their lives and being uncomfortable in their classroom should not be one of them. Our classroom is on the second floor of the building and even with the windows open, we do not get any airflow. The temperature in our room can reach upwards of ninety degrees on a hot day! My students have a difficult time sitting still and staying focused because of AD/HD, a learning disability causes frustration, Autism makes them perseverate on the fact that they are uncomfortable, an emotional disturbance can cause them to lose their patience with someone much quicker than normal. All of these characteristics are heightened because they are hot and uncomfortable. It is difficult to teach a lesson or continue with a lesson when they are only focused on how uncomfortable they feel. These kiddos have enough things to worry about and feeling uncomfortable due to heat should not be one of them.
Having a fan in our room will enable us to feel cool and comfortable, which will help us to focus better on our ultimate job of learning. All of my students are wonderful kids and have so much to offer. I want to give them the best learning environment that I possibly can. I want these kiddos to feel AWESOME about themselves. They can not do that if they feel frustrated and uncomfortable which in turns affects their learning.
