This is my second year teaching the first grade. My school is a high-needs charter school, servicing students in a low-income, high-poverty community. As a charter school, it is allocating most of its finances to address the educational needs of the students, which means that it is providing the students with a qualified, and certified teaching staff. Many of the essentials are either forgotten or neglected. I know that it is important for my students to feel that they are worthy of individual student desks. They can take ownership of this small property and feel that they are just as valued and worthy as the students in the other first grade class. The fact that my students come from families in which they may have to share what little they have with siblings. Having a desk of their own in school will be the first time for them to have a desk.
