My classroom is made up of a very diverse population of children. Almost all of my students live at or below the national poverty level. Many of my students speak little English. I encourage a love of reading for my students, and they truly enjoy books and literature. I know that the exposure of students to non-fiction books is an important part of extending their knowledge of real life concepts and experiences. Because of my students economic situations, reading might be the only exposure that they have to certain situations. Non-fiction books are also important in teaching comprehension and inferencing skills at a young age. These strategies and skills will allow them to continue being successful throughout their educational experiences.
