We are a middle school in Utah. Some of my students come from moderate to lower class incomes who do not encourage reading as a way to a better life. I am avid about reading and know that reading gives them this cycle of success. Our school is an AVID school that teaches students a better way to get out of the cycle of poverty into an opportunity to graduate from high school and go on to college. They will be the first in their families to do so. Reading in all its forms is the cycle breaker that wins. My project this year is to form small reading groups with books as the central focus that motivates students to come to the reading group and be excited about it. I know this will make the difference in them this year. I especially want to raise the reading scores of some of my kiddos who scored as low as 1% on the Scholastic Reading Inventory. By motivating them to read using the kindles in our small groups they will begin to raise all their grades and be achievers.
