My students will read texts about a variety of cultures and experiences. As part of Teachers for Global Classroom, I am working to develop global competencies, preparing my students for college and careers. Many of our students have limited knowledge and understanding of the daily lives and struggle people around the world encounter. Literature allows students to investigate the world and empathize with characters from a variety of backgrounds. Through reading select texts we will explore universal themes, commonalities among young people in America and those around the globe. Through our commonalities, we will seek to collaborate with a classroom in another country. Our literature will create perspective, and we can then communicate our ideas and take action to address our mutual global citizenship. At the very least, students will come to understand how privileged they are, even if they are not wealthy. Our end goal is to embrace the fact that with privilege comes a responsibility to our fellow man.
