The area in which I teach consists of broken families, low socioeconomic status, and cultural struggles. Many of my students spend their free time working or helping at home rather than learning or planning for the future. When I speak with my students about their goals, most of them do not have ideas past the weekend. I want my students to discover life lessons, current events, and opportunities in life that lie ahead of them. I will do this by introducing them to current events and inspiring them to research further and represent their new knowledge in community projects. Meanwhile, my students will be improving their non-fiction text comprehension skills with the articles we read and the questions we discuss. Fifth grade state testing includes all non-fiction text comprehension, which I am trying to prepare them for while keeping them engaged in the content through items such as Scholastic News and Time for Kids.
