I teach a class of 25 wonderful 2nd and 3rd graders in a gifted and talented classroom. My school is about 65% free and reduced lunch or about 65% low income. As a school we are trying to provide our students with as much background knowledge as possible. Many students come from families that don't travel or read for fun and don't have the knowledge to respond or understand what they are reading because they don't have the experience. I am trying to provide them with a magazine that will give them knowledge about what is happening around them so that they can have the experience through their reading and also a chance to understand how to read a non-fiction article and understand the many different text features that will help them to analyze and summarize what they are reading. I hope that with this experience they can find ways to connect to their world.
